Hearst Gallery presents Ralph Borge:
A Symbolic Realist and His Circle, through March 14th. A retrospective exhibition by California College of the Arts beloved master professor of painting and drawing, Ralph Borge (1921 - 2009), including a selection of works by some of his most noted former students. Moraga Art Gallery
is featuring the work of 2 Moraga artists, Leslie Swartz and Mariann Mortensen. Swartz's subjects range from cats and elephants to garlic and orchids. Photographs often inspire Swartz’s paintings and drawings, as do her extensive travels. Glass Artist/Metalsmith Mortensen's fused glass creations are lit up with copper accents and rich color, as seen in her jewelry, platters, coasters and functional dishware. Local artists Wenda Pyman, photographer, and Terry Hunt, potter and sculptor, will be featured in a new show that starts March 23. Moraga Art Gallery is located at 570 Center St in the Rheem Center.

The next Green Rheem Film Night is Thursday, March 11th and will feature the award-winning documentary "A Chemical Reaction," about a dermatologist who raised concerns about the chemical pesticides that people unknowingly put on their lawns, and began one of the most effective community initiatives in the history of North America. $10 for film, wine tasting, and appetizers, $8 for movie only, and $5 for students (online prices). Creative Writing and Reading Series: Jane Vandenburgh, the author of two novels, Failure to Zigzag, and The Physics of Sunset, Her Memoir, A Pocket History of Sex in the 20th Century, has just been published. First Friday Forum topic for March 5 is Innovation or Die: The Future of Print Journalism presented by UC Berkeley Ford Foundation Fellow, Richard Koci-Hernandez. MUSIC

The Tenth Anniversary of the Lafayette Jazz Festival, presented by Generations in Jazz Foundation will be performed at the new Lafayette Library Concert Hall, March 5th and 6th featuring jazz greats, The Frank Martin Group and Ellen Rowe and Friends. A celebration of Contra Costa Counties' best young jazz musicians will be held on March 7th with Middle and High School Honor Bands at the Veterans memorial Building. Under the direction of David Morales, the Cantare Chorale, 117 singers strong, with full orchestra will present Johannes Brahms’ Requiem. Joining the Chorale will be soloists Candace Johnson, soprano, and Jere Torkelsen, bass. KIDS & PARENTS

The 11th Annual Sister-to-Sister summit, open to all middle-school girls, will take place on Saturday, March 20 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Bentley High School, 1000 Upper Happy Valley Road in Lafayette. Sister-to-Sister brings middle and high school girls together in an energizing and supportive environment to address the challenging issues of being a girl. The event is planned and facilitated by volunteer high-school girls from the Acalanes Union High School District, who have gone through a rigorous selection and training process. The cost is $30.00. Parents are invited to drop-off their girls and stay for an hour long parenting workshop on raising middle-school girls. Registration is required and should be completed before March 10, 2010. Chinese - Mandarin for children is now available through Orinda Recreation Dept. Storytelling method will be used in teaching. Students will be able to master Chinese Pinyin (pronunciation system), fundamental vocabulary and structure, simple and practical daily conversations, storytelling, and simple character writing. Prom season has arrived and The Princess Project is giving away free prom dresses and accessories to high school girls who can’t afford to buy a dress. East Bay Dress Giveaway: Saturday, March 13. Location: 2201 Broadway, Oakland, CA. San Francisco Dress Giveaway: Saturday, March 20 and Saturday March 27. All high school girls who are in financial need of a prom dress welcome; no proof financial need is required but must bring a valid high school I.D. to receive a free dress. Each girl will be able to shop and choose one accessory and one gown from thousands of gowns of all different colors, sizes, fabrics and designers. May bring one female companion to help. The Lafayette Rotary Club
is pleased to announce the date for the “Annual Egg Hunt.” This event is open to all children ages 2-through 3rd grade. The event takes place at Plaza Park (corner of Mt. Diablo Blvd. and Moraga Rd) in Lafayette, at 10:00am, Saturday, April 3, 2010. The park lawn will be covered with candy for the kids to put in their baskets. Contra Costa Association of Realtors Scholarship Foundation is offering scholarships to residents of Central Contra Costa County that have completed one year of full-time college, completed courses with emphasis on real estate, finance and/or business and have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. The 3rd Annual Fore Our Schools Golf Tournament is held at the Moraga Country Club on Monday, May 3, 2010. The four-person scramble format will begin at 11AM with a shotgun start. It's Girl Scout Cookie Time! From March 5 through March 21, Girl Scouts will be selling those delicious cookies at various locations throughout Lamorinda, so watch for Girl Scout booths at Starbucks, Safeway, CVS-Pharmacy, Diablo Foods and Noah’s Bagels. All proceeds from the cookie sale support Girl Scouting in Northern California.

The Northern California chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society will hold its annual Walk MS at Walnut Creek Heather Farm Park on Sunday, April 18. Registration is now open at walk.msconnection.org. Over 600 walkers are anticipated this year at Heather Farm Park. This year’s festivities include live music, entertainment and family fun at Heather Farm Park. Dogs are welcome and the walk will even have a doggy rest-stop. Moraga Movers next luncheon will be March 8 at the Saint Mary's Soda Center at 11:00 a.m. The Speaker will be Budd MacKenzie, the founder of Trust in Education, formed to provide health care, education and economic development programs in Afghanistan. Among TIE’s projects are the building of a secular school, making micro-business loans, expanding agricultural production, improving irrigation systems, and providing capital for whatever will assist the villagers in becoming economically independent. Local residents age 55 and over interested in activities of the 400-plus Moraga Movers organization are welcome to call membership chairman Julie Fisher at 376-7408. The Suburban Woman's Club of Lafayette meets on the 3rd Thursday of the month at the Lafayette Community Center in the Elderberry Room at 11:30 a.m. We invite all women over the age of 55 to join us.
