| Lamorinda Reads 2011: Carter Beats the Devil

Lamorinda Reads, the annual community-wide book club, will begin on September 19 with a book that has just begun to attract a lot of attention. "Carter Beats the Devil," by Glen David Gold, is a critically acclaimed historical mystery set in Oakland in the 1920's.
"When I started it I was immediately sucked into it," said Moraga Librarian Beth Girshman, "I liked the mix of history and fiction. It is a preposterous story, in a crazy and dazzling way."
The three librarians who selected the book, Lafayette's Susan Weaver, Orinda's Caroline Gick, and Girshman, wanted a great book that was not too well known, by a local author, that would allow them to spin a lot of interesting activities for the community. They didn't know at the time that Warner Brothers Studio is laying plans for a movie and hoping to attract Johnny Depp to the title role. Read the book first!
