 | | | Photo Andy Scheck | | | | | | People driving along St. Mary's Road or on the Saint Mary's College campus may find it hard to miss the large structure outlined by its steel frame on the northwest corner of the campus. It is the Alioto Recreation Center - 8,000 square feet that will be dedicated to fitness, fun and relaxation for Saint Mary's students starting in the spring of 2015.
"Most colleges have such facilities and students look for it," says Mark Orr, director of athletics and recreational sports. "Our young people are very active and have a commitment to health and wellness, and this facility will support those needs."
The center will include three full-size courts for recreational and indoor intramural sports, including basketball, soccer and volleyball; a climbing wall; an aquatic center that will offer lap swimming, lessons, a swim club and a whirlpool spa; as well as a large patio and lawn areas with space for relaxation, socializing, study and outdoor events. "Students will come to exercise, take yoga or Pilates classes, or participate in a pickup basketball game," adds Orr. "There is a lot of excitement building up as the center takes shape."
The lack of seasonal rain allowed construction to progress rapidly during the winter.
