Man Commits Suicide in Moraga
Photo provided by Orlando Juni Jr.

Moraga police were unable to stop a man from ending his life with a handgun this afternoon in downtown Moraga. The man in his 50s was immediately transported to John Muir Medical Center following the incident where he was pronounced dead. Police responded to a call after noon about a resident on Donald Drive making suicidal threats. Officers called on the Orinda and Lafayette police departments to assist at the scene near a busy arterial close to Donald Rheem Elementary School. Police negotiated with the man for over 15 minutes, attempting to get him to put the gun down, but were unsuccessful. No one else was hurt in the incident. The school was locked down and afterward parents were asked to pick up their children at an alternate entrance. Police would not release more information at this time. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Moraga Police Department at (925) 888-7055.
