Interested in a Seat on the School Board?
By Cathy Tyson
Due to board member Gwen Reinke's move out of the area, there will be a vacant seat on the Acalanes Union High School District Board. "She has provided tremendous leadership and service to the District," said Superintendent John Nickerson. "Ms. Reinke will be greatly missed by our educational community." Schools in the district include Acalanes, Campolindo, Miramonte, Las Lomas, the Acalanes Center for Independent Study and Acalanes Adult Education.
At a recent meeting the board agreed to make a provisional appointment to fill the vacancy, rather than have an expensive (more than $150,000) and drawn out special election to fill the spot. The provisional appointment runs from Oct. 1 until the general election in November of 2014, when the seat will be on the ballot.
Interested parties can submit an application until 4 p.m. on Sept. 16. Just a few days after the deadline, on Sept. 19 at 6 p.m., there will be an orientation meeting for eligible applicants at the newly renovated school district offices at 1212 Pleasant Hill Road, Lafayette. Interviews will take place at a special board meeting Sept. 25. Applicants need to be at least 18 years old, a citizen of the state, resident of the school district, and a registered voter. For more information, contact Jill Ramsay, assistant to the superintendent, at (925) 280-3902 or via email at jramsay@acalanes.k12.ca.us; or visit the district's website for all the details, www.acalanes.k12.ca.us.
