Lafayette Again Joins SunShares Program
Just as it did last year, Lafayette is once again offering residents a chance to join in the Bay Area SunShares program to take advantage of discounts on solar energy.
Different this year, however, is news that the program has been expanded to include discounts on zero emission vehicles (ZEVs), including the all-electric Nissan Leaf and the Toyota Mirai, a hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle, at well below market rates, and even has a program for renters to help them connect with location-specific information about new utility programs that will allow anyone to buy more renewable energy through the grid.
SunShares is a community-wide clean energy program that makes going solar or buying zero-emission vehicles simple and affordable by pooling the buying power of individual participants to get more competitive pricing from solar companies and vehicle manufacturers. The program includes discounts, free workshops, and can even help renters find out more about their clean energy options.
Administered by the Business Council on Climate, SunShares helps solar and ZEV companies reduce high costs associated with customer education and acquisition, which in turn allows the firms to offer discounted pricing. These so-called "soft costs" are widely seen as one of the primary barriers to accelerating the deployment of clean energy technologies.
As part of its commitment toward its clean energy goals, the city of Lafayette is joining over 30 communities and businesses in the Bay Area SunShares program. This is a limited time program that runs through Nov. 4. Residents can register for the program on the Bay Area SunShares website www.bayareasunshares.org for a free solar evaluation, ZEV discount code, or to learn about renter options by Nov. 4.
Individuals participating in SunShares can get neutral information on their clean energy options at over 20 free workshops being held across the Bay Area. Interested residents need to act quickly, however, by signing a solar contract or purchasing a zero emissions vehicle by Nov. 18. Any questions can be addressed by contacting sunshares@bc3sfbay.org.
