Photo provided | | | | | | The city council heard an update from the Public Art Committee at its Feb. 24 meeting, including details of the latest art piece recently installed in the city and plans for an upcoming Art Walk and Talk event.
PAC member Janice Peacock drew the council's attention to artist Alice M. Stern's work, "A Living Street," installed in February at the newly constructed condominiums behind Trader Joe's at 945 Mountain View Drive.
Peacock explained that the 8-foot diameter work, inset into the pedestrian courtyard space, seeks to honor the history of the interwoven fabric of the Lafayette community by utilizing concentric circles in a quilting pattern, joined together by a flowing pathway recalling the creek. The design uses only straight lines yet creates the illusion and movement of curved, organic focal points.
Residents will get a chance to hear from the artist herself at a special event planned at 1 p.m. March 21 - a public art walk and talk.
The free event will start at the Lafayette Library and Learning Center Art Gallery with a short introductory talk from award-winning Lafayette painter and print-maker Pam Fletcher whose work is currently on exhibition at the gallery. The walk will begin at 1:15 p.m. and will visit works at the LLLC, Plaza Park, La Fiesta Square, the Mercantile Building, the Town Center, the Jennifer Perlmutter Gallery, culminating after about an hour and a half at the latest public art on Mountain View Drive to hear Stern talk about her work.
Peacock, a five-year member of the PAC and 27-year resident of Lafayette who has been active in the arts for many years, will be leading the tour with PAC Vice Chair Susan Loria. Peacock urges residents to "Come see Lafayette's wonderful collection of outdoor art." She notes there are many lovely, and often overlooked works of public art in the city.
