The regular season ended with a high-scoring shootout between the Cougars and Dons, with Campo coming out on top 44-24. The win clinched a NCS playoff bye for the first place Cougars, who had a perfect 5-0 DFAL record and a 9-1 overall record. The Dons, however, ended their disappointing season on a seven game losing streak, and a winless league record.
Friday's game began evenly, as the score the Dons took an early 14-10 lead, thanks to one of Tyler Malley's two touchdown runs. Malley ended up finishing the game with 80 total all-purpose yards. However, that was the last time Acalanes lead the game, as Campo's second half performance emphatically proved why they are the best team in the league.
In the second half, the Cougars' offense began to light the Acalanes defense. The offensive surge was led by quarterback Tommy Stephens' two touchdown passes, one to Miles Macy and another, a sixty-yard bomb, to Patrick Wirth. The Cougar running game proved as dominant, as senior running back Anthony "Rocket" Rodriguez scored twice, including a fifty-yard run on Campo's last offensive possession.
After the game, linebacker and junior Taylor Giles said: "Acalanes played a good game. We got in over our heads about league championships and, as a result, we barely held on to a game we should have won easily. But in the end we got our starters good playing times and had solid development of our offense."
The Cougar season continues with NCS playoffs, starting at home against Ygnacio Valley on Saturday, November 29, at 7p.m.
