“Feathers, Fur and Fins,” at the Lafayette Gallery, honors the creatures large and small that enrich our lives. The show is open through August 15th. As a special feature during the show, the community is invited to bring in pet photos and related quips to be posted on the gallery’s bulletin board. Bedford Gallery’s exhibition Full Deck presents an anthology of skate art from the 1960's to the present and will run through September 13. Local Photographer Keith Modenbach will be exhibiting his original photography during the month of July at Fastframe of Lafayette. Keith shoots using film -- not digital -- and develops his own silver gelatin fiber prints. He considers photography his joy, searching for beauty and harmony in everyday life. Award-winning watercolor artist George Ehrenhaft will display 30 paintings at the Orinda Library Gallery during the month of August. Based on a theme he calls “The Near and the Far,” the selection of landscape paintings includes several close-to-home sites such as Lafayette Reservoir, Moraga Ranch, Tilden Regional Park, and Mount Diablo, among others. Subjects far afield include the River Li (China), Kathmandu (Nepal) and cities in Italy (Florence, Venice, and Lucca). Ehrenhaft, a resident of Moraga, prefers to paint plein-air rather than from photos in order to convey the shapes, colors, and mood he finds at a particular time and place. The exhibition runs from August 1st to 31st and is sponsored by the Orinda Arts Council.

"Maids & Matrons", a new comedy by Kathryn G. McCarty will open at Lesher Arts Center August 19th. “Kathy’s plays use comedy to explore sensitive political and social issues,” said Director Clay David. "It's a screwball comedy, slapstick at times, about a dysfunctional family's preparation for the biggest wedding of the season. "Wizard of Oz" at the Hacienda de las Flores. The After School Drama Club’s Summer Drama Camp’s young performers get ready to skip down the yellow brick road for their annual outside production. This year, the group proudly presents The Wizard of Oz on July 24 at 7 PM at the Hacienda de las Flores (2100 Donald Dr. Moraga). Gates open at 5:30 PM for picnics. A group of 24 Moraga youths will be performing in this year’s Summer Drama Camp. Woodminster Summer Musicals presents “Singin’ In the Rain” as the second show of their 43rd season in Joaquin Miller Park. A cast of over 40 tap-dances up a storm. Moraga Community Pear Picking on Sat, August 1 and 2, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Orchard next to J.M. School - corner of Canyon Road & Camino Pablo. These trees are part of Moraga's history - planted in abundance in the 1920's and 1930's. In fact, the Moraga Ranch Company had 38 orchards in pears, and "conducted the largest pear production operation under one management in the world" (from Moraga's Pride). Come to help pick the pears from these remaining Moraga trees. The fruit will be donated to the Solano/Contra Costa County Food Bank. If you fill a box, you can take some pears home with you! Wear protective clothing, i.e. long sleeves, sturdy footwear - ground is very uneven. Bring fruit pickers, if you have one and a bag for taking some pears home.

Orinda resident Rachael Frank is interviewing families interested in participating in a cultural exchange by hosting an international high school student for the coming academic year. Program for Academic Exchange (PAX) is a non-profit foundation; their students are between 15 and 18, speak English, have full insurance coverage and spending money. PAX families are asked to provide students with meals, a place to sleep/study, and a warm supportive environment. Private rooms are not required and single parents, young couples and retirees are welcome to apply. The Lafayette Library will host its first ever Chess Tournament! On Saturday, July 25, join players of all ages and abilities in a non-rated test of skills. On Saturday, September 19th from 10am – 2pm the town of Orinda will host the 5th Annual Classic Car Show. This free event, presented by Orinda Motors, continues to benefit the Seniors Around Town transportation service. In addition to American and European classic and modern exotic cars, this year’s event will feature special exhibits of classic and custom motorcycles as well as vintage race cars.
