The Acalanes Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) hosted a high tea at Moraga Valley Presbyterian Church on Saturday, Feb 4, recognizing five local seniors and five East Bay fifth graders. The seniors participating in DAR's Good Citizens Program submitted a packet exhibiting the four qualities of a good citizen: dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism. The students had the option to write an essay on this year's focus question: "What are the civic responsibilities of a good citizen and why are these duties, activities, and behaviors important to the shaping of the America you hope to experience?"
The overall winner who will advance to the District Level was Katherine Jacobson from Campolindo High School, who was awarded $1,000. Each participant received a flag flown over the US capitol in their name, along with a $250 award, and a Good Citizens pin and certificate. The fifth graders submitted an informative essay on John Philip Sousa's march "Stars and Stripes Forever", which was first performed on May 14, 1897. Congratulations to the first-place winner Matthew Olsen, who advanced to the DAR's District level. The Acalanes Chapter Members are delighted to reward these talented and patriotic students and wish them well as they continue their life's journey. Members of the Acalanes DAR also celebrated Nancy Dupuis's 101st birthday at the same event.
