Lafayette Teacher Arrested for Child Molestation

Detectives from the Lafayette Police Department are investigating a child molestation case involving 47-year-old Michael Merrick, a resident of Lafayette and teacher at Stanley Intermediate School. Merrick has been active in coaching youth sports and also tutors children on a private basis.
The victim reported to investigators that she was molested at least three times during tutoring sessions and received up to 140 text messages a day from Merrick. Many of these messages were of a sexual nature.
The molestation was reported on October 25th and Merrick was arrested two days later. He was booked for Lewd and Lascivious Act with a Child, Exhibition of Lewd Material to a Minor, Contact or Communication with a minor to commit offense, Unnatural Sexual Interest in child/arrange meeting with intent, and Distributing Harmful Material to a Minor.
Given the number of students Merrick was in contact with, detectives believe there may be additional victims. Anyone with any information is asked to call Detective Berch Parker at (925) 299-3222.
