Campolindo Bestows Service Awards to Students

Campolindo High School recognized more than 100 students at the Third Annual Volunteer Service Awards on May 24 in the Performing Art Center. Students received awards for their service to organizations as varied as Bay Area Rescue Mission, Chabot Space & Science Center, Children's Hospital, Global Student Embassy and Harbor House.
Campolindo High School Principal John Walker commended the students during his opening remarks for "demonstrating civic responsibility at their school, in local communities, and throughout countries all around the world." In total this past year, students volunteered for more than 12,000 combined hours.
Many of these students earned the President's Service Volunteer Award given by the federal government to recognize Americans who by their demonstrated commitment and example inspire others to engage in volunteer service. Bronze, Silver, and Gold awards are earned by students who volunteer between 25 and 250 hours over a 12-month time period.
One of the event's student speakers, senior Olivia Carver, congratulated the recipients for giving so much and provided encouragement by saying she believes "everyone, no matter how busy or how limited in resources, can serve."
Another student speaker, junior Spencer Giglio remarked, "We all helped people through our work and that was the intention. But what I want all of you to remember is the feeling you received after your work, whatever you may have done. Remember the sense of accomplishment and the joy that you felt in your service."
Students throughout Lamorinda continue great volunteer work year round and they will be able to apply for these awards again in spring of 2017.
